Opal Leverne Scruggs' Obituary
WELLBORN — Opal Leverne Scruggs, 90, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Scruggs was a lifelong resident of Wellborn and a devoted member of Eualton Baptist Church. She served for many years on the Pine Grove Cemetery Board, working tirelessly to maintain and preserve the grounds. She managed properties for her dear friend, the late Katie Cooper, and was employed at D&D Gift Shop, where she created flower arrangements and made deliveries.
Some of her best times were spent running the concession stand at Wellborn ballgames and at Woodland Park with her late friend, Margaret Chandler. She was an avid supporter of local sports and a passionate environmental activist, featured in Baptized in PCBs by Ellen Griffith Spears and on 60 Minutes for her involvement in the Monsanto pollution case. Known for her generosity, she never hesitated to lend a hand, share what she had, or offer a kind word to brighten someone’s day.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.W. and Willie Ferguson, and her brothers, Sonny Ferguson and Billy Ferguson. Survivors include her children: Kay Fleming, Terry Scruggs (Cynthia Jane), Tim Scruggs (Pam), and Maury Scruggs (Kim); grandchildren: Abby Scruggs Quinn, Calon Fleming, Terry Scruggs II, Lindsey Scruggs, Hillary Scruggs LeGrand, Brittany Scruggs, Trey Scruggs, and Trent Scruggs; and great-grandchildren: Colt Quinn, Ruby LeGrand, Lily LeGrand, Carleigh Fleming, and Joleigh Rainey.
In lieu of flowers, the family will host a Pine Grove Cemetery Cleanup Day in her honor. Donations or volunteer time and equipment are welcomed to help preserve the cemetery she cared for so deeply.
