Murray Thomas Smith's Obituary
Murray Thomas Smith, 89, of Denver, Colorado, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2022, at the home of his daughter Alison Landers in Anniston, Alabama.
Murray was born in Tuskegee, Alabama. He graduated high school from Georgia Military Academy, now named Woodward Academy, in College Park, Georgia. He received a bachelor of science degree in mining engineering from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
In December of 1960, he married Mary Knight (Moore) Smith. They were married nearly 60 years
when Mary Knight passed away in October, 2020. Early on they lived briefly in Grants, New Mexico
and El Centro, California where Murray worked in the mining industry. However, the majority of their
lives were spent in Denver, Colorado where Murray worked within several branches of the U.S.
Department of the Interior. He was fortunate to retire from the government in his early-fifties which
enabled him to work many years with his wife at Smith Income Tax Service. His last year was spent
living with his daughter Alison and her family in Anniston, Alabama.
Murray is survived by his daughter Alison Landers and her husband Chris of Anniston, Alabama;
daughter Amy Stone and her husband Chris of Denver, Colorado; and by his adored grandsons Trent and Wilson Landers of Birmingham, Alabama; and Thomas Stone of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by his brother Tyler Smith; brother John Horton and his wife Margaret Smith; along with many beloved nieces and nephews and their extended families. He is predeceased by his devoted wife Mary Knight, his parents Murray and Sarah G. Smith, and his sister Lucy Anne Black.
We could not have been more blessed than we were to have Murray as a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was loving, patient, selfless, kind, honest, faithful, quiet but always smiling, and he loved to laugh. He loved riding his bicycle, going for walks, fishing in the ocean, reading the news, and watching old westerns over and over.
Murray's cremains will be buried next to Mary Knight's at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver,
Colorado, at a small private service.
We will announce future plans to have a celebration of Mary Knight and Murray's lives.
