James Lofton Smith's Obituary
James Lofton Smith “Smutt”, aged 82, of Pell City, AL, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at UAB St. Vincent’s East in Trussville, AL.
James graduated from Talladega High School in 1961 and attended Jacksonville State University. He owned Smith Insurance Agency for 45 year
He was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Talladega, AL and Masonic Lodge 261. He was a former member of the Talladega Rotary Club and formerly served as Jr. Warden for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
James enjoyed restoring antique cars, attending antique car shows and driving his 1966 convertible Mustang in parades and special events. He always had a project he was working on. He was also a devoted Alabama football fan who loved watching games and hanging out with friends on the deck he built.
He is survived by Beverly Smith, his loving wife of 59 years and his daughter Kim Blanton (Jeff). He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Austin Blanton, Griffin Smith (Kinley), Bailey Elkins (Gabe), and Garrett Smith, four great-grandchildren, Judson & Jase Smith and Hadley & Hayden Elkins, his sister Alice Challender, brother Tommy Smith (Delores), sister-in-law Marilyn McCrary, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Lofton and Viola Smith, his son Jason Stuart Smith “Newt”, and his brothers-in-law Tommy Challender and Barry McCrary.
A Memorial Service will be held on April 9, 2026, at 3:00 PM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Talladega, AL, with visitation beginning at 2:00 PM in St. Peter’s Parish Hall. The Reverend John Carlisto will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 208 North Street E., Talladega, AL 35160.
