Bobby Gerald Yates' Obituary
Bobby Gerald Yates, age 83, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on July 19, 1942, in Lineville, Clay County, Alabama, Bobby was the son of Rufus Huel Yates and Zenobia Hicks Yates. He grew up in Lineville, where he attended school, played football and developed the strong values of faith, hard work and integrity that guided him throughout his life.
Following graduation, Bobby enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served from 1960 to 1963. Stationed in Long Beach, California, he served as an Assault Boat Coxswain and Special Boats Operator, spending time off the coast of San Diego and among the Hawaiian Islands. In 1962, he participated in Operation Dominic as a member of Joint Task Force Eight under the Department of Defense during a significant Cold War operation. True to his humble nature, Bobby rarely spoke of his service, but he carried the responsibility entrusted to him with honor, integrity and quiet dedication. While stationed in Long Beach, he also enjoyed a brief appearance in the 1961 film All Hands on Deck.
While serving in California, Bobby met the love of his life, Patricia Croft, in 1961. Their courtship blossomed into a beautiful marriage on June 24, 1962 and together they shared nearly 64 years of love, devotion, laughter and unwavering commitment. Through every season of life, Patricia remained his greatest blessing and closest companion.
After returning home, Bobby built a long and respected career with M&H Valve Company. He worked in the Engineering Department, was over the Personnel Department and later served as Health and Safety Director before retiring in 2007. He was known for his strong work ethic, fairness and willingness to help others.
A true Southern gentleman, Bobby was known for his kindness, humility and genuine concern for people. He never sought attention for himself and was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed swimming, golfing, sharing stories and spending time with those he loved.
Bobby was also a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 189 in Anniston AL, where he was well known for his beautiful singing voice. He especially enjoyed leading karaoke, bringing joy, laughter and music to everyone around him. Whether singing a song, sharing a smile or lending a helping hand, he had a way of making people feel welcome and valued.
Above all else, Bobby loved his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather who adored his grandkids and a loyal friend. His steady presence, gentle spirit and unconditional love were gifts that will be treasured forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Huel Yates and Zenobia Hicks Yates; his grandparents, John Kyle Yates and Mattie Stewart Yates, and Andrew Hicks and Dorothy Watkins Hicks; his sisters, Joyce Jacobs (Dale), Wanda Brumbelow (Mel), and Ruenette Hulsey; his brother, Terry Yates (Joy); and his beloved grandson, William Yates McGuffin, whom he loved dearly.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Croft Yates; his loving daughter, Heather Cole; his granddaughter, Cecilia McGuffin, and her fiancé, Cameron Crosby; his grandson, George Cole and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
Though our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that Bobby is at peace and reunited with loved ones who have gone before him, especially his beloved grandson, Will. His legacy of love, faith, kindness, humility, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Our family would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of his Doctors and the wonderful team at Enhabit Hospice. Your compassionate care, kindness and support brought comfort to both Bobby and our family during a difficult time. We are deeply grateful for everything you did and will never forget your dedication and love.
A military memorial service will be held this fall at Sacred Heart Church in Anniston, AL with details to be announced by the family at a later date.
"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23
